Hej, I’m Sophie Steinhagen, a passionate phycologist specializing in the fascinating world of seaweeds. As a molecular seaweed ecologist, I delve into the taxonomy, physiology, and overall diversity of marine algae. As an Associate Professor at the University of Bergen, Norway, and a docent at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, I take great joy in sharing my passion for marine phototrophs through both my research and teaching, inspiring the next generation of scientists.

My work focuses on the development of new strains for cultivating valuable green algal species, particularly within the genus Ulva. With a keen eye on environmental sustainability, I strive to pioneer cultivation techniques that encompass seeding, juvenile growth, and both laboratory and open-water cultivation, all finely tuned to thrive in the unique conditions of their respective ecosystem.

Through my research, I explore the intricate interplay between environmental factors and the genetic composition and genomic set up of seaweeds, unraveling the secrets behind the content of high-value compounds in the cultivated biomass. My commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge in my field underscores my dedication to advancing the frontiers of marine sciences.

Beyond the laboratory and the vast marine expanse, you’ll find me enjoying the simple joys of life. Whether I’m taking leisurely walks with my faithful companion, Coco, exploring the vibrant underwater wonders through snorkeling and swimming, or tending to the lush greenery in my garden, where I nurture and cultivate various plant life.

I look forward to sharing my passion for seaweeds and the wonders of the natural world with you!

Curriculum Vitae (short)

2024 – now: Associate Professor

University of BergenUniversity Museum of Bergen (Norway)

As an Associate Professor at the University of Bergen, my work focuses on exploring the taxonomy, evolution, and physiology of cryptogams, with a particular emphasis on algae. This research aims to uncover the relationships and adaptations that define these fascinating organisms. Additionally, I have the privilege of curating the cryptogam collection at the University Museum of Bergen, which houses a rich and diverse array of specimens. Through careful preservation and study, I contribute to safeguarding these valuable collections for future scientific inquiry and education.

Nov 2024 – now: Docent (Habilitation)

University of GothenburgTjärnö Marine Laboratory (Sweden)

Docent and Researcher at the University of Gothenburg with a focus on marine macrophyte biodiversity, sustainable large-scale seaweed aquaculture, development of novel strains for European seaweed aquaculture.

Jan 2021 – 2024: Senior researcher

University of GothenburgSven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences (Sweden)

Researcher at the University of Gothenburg with a focus on marine macrophyte biodiversity, sustainable large-scale seaweed aquaculture, development of novel strains for Scandinavian seaweed aquaculture, and sustainable techniques for extracting seaweed-based high value compounds. I apply modern molecular techniques, cutting edge technologies as well as classical ecological approaches.

Jan 2019 – Dec 2020: Postdoctoral Researcher (Postdoc)

University of GothenburgSven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences (Sweden)
